On her first day as a detective inspector, Charlie Steele is handed a case that doesn't sit right: a senior council official found dead in a vacant property, the scene clumsily staged to suggest suicide.
The woman was at the centre of a controversial housing deal, fuelling tension between the council and a private company with everything to gain. At home, her marriage was falling apart, with her husband planning a new life with his pregnant girlfriend.
As Charlie pushes the investigation forward, uncomfortable parallels with her own past begin to surface. Then a second body is discovered, another death made to look like suicide, but this time the staging is different.
Pressure mounts. Leads falter. And with her boss threatening to replace her, Charlie is running out of time to prove herself.
