More detailed discussion can be found in a number of excellent books and reviews Carothers worked with aliphatic straight chain polyesters, which were soluble in organic liquids, low melting and had poor resistance to hydrolysis. These polyesters were not used as textile fibers. The extension of these concepts later led to the discovery of nylon-6,6 in 1935 and Whinfield and Dickson developed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in 1941.
