The African American Almanac is written in an engaging style by subject experts, and reviewed by academic editor Christopher Brooks of Virginia Commonwealth University. Included is a chronology chapter that highlights important events in African American history. A related chapter on African American Firsts focuses on important first-time achievements. Also included is a chapter on significant documents in African American History, providing first-hand accounts of historical events, a chapter on African American Landmarks, arranged geographically by state, and a nation-by-nation profile of Africa as well as significant countries in the western hemisphere, outlining a history of the Diaspora. Politics, religion, science, art, music, literature, sports, education, civil rights, military and law are also covered in chapters offering narrative history along with separate biographical profiles of key figures. An appendix of award winners highlights significant accomplishments across a wide spectrum of activity and more than 500 images (photographs, artwork, charts, and maps) enhance and clarify the text.
