In particular, the volume focuses on aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Aided AAC provides learners with tools needed to supplement or replace speech that they are unable to use effectively. Such tools are particularly important for this population who, if they are unable to communicate effectively, often display challenging behaviors (e.g., tantrums, aggression). Aided Augmentative Communication for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders provides an overview of how AAC may be used to benefit individuals with ASD who lack functional communication skills and have complex communication needs.
