My Journey from Paris to Vienna
Looking at the title, one can be forgiven for assuming that you are about to discover Europe. The reality is that Ambassador Jackson shares his 61-year journey from Paris, Tennessee to Vienna, Virginia, exploring life and work in twelve different countries, mostly in Africa. You will see how an eighth-grade history class led to a career in diplomacy and how an assignment in Montreal, Canada, sparked a passion for promoting human rights and learning about Africa's 54 countries with their unique languages, cultures, and histories. Along the way, you will meet kings, queens, presidents, ministers, diplomats, development experts, and some extraordinary people who have no titles but are changing lives.

The mission of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) is to capture, preserve, and share the experiences of America's diplomats. We do this to enrich the professional knowledge of diplomatic practitioners and to strengthen public appreciation for the contributions diplomacy makes to our national interests. We accomplish this by recording and publishing diplomatic oral histories and by helping diplomats publish books based on their experiences and research.
This book is a transcript from ADST's collection of more than twenty-five hundred diplomatic oral histories. Our diverse collection spans a century of U.S. diplomacy. In addition, our book series ("Diplomats and Diplomacy Books" and "Memoirs and Occasional Papers"), through which we have facilitated the publication of more than one hundred books and counting, provide a lasting record of the life, work, contributions, and reflections of America's diplomats.
