America's Soluble Problems, while recognising the many successes of the US economy, analyses its well-known problems with a fresh new approach. Over the last quarter-century the US economy has grown relatively slowly. Living standards for many have been stagnant, and among the poorest they have fallen. The proportion of US output from manufacturing is far below the world average, a major contributor to the US trade deficit. Government expenditures have exceeded revenues nearly every year, causing the US national debt to rise sharply. John Mills argues that none of these problems was inevitable. All can be traced back to decisions on macroeconomic policies which could have been different, and which, if implemented, would have produced far better results. As to the future, entirely achievable changes to monetary and fiscal strategy could transform the prospects for the US economy and for most American citizens. America's Soluble Problems sets out how this could be done.
