He watched three men die and he understood. Then he went to Aphrodite and asked for three golden apples, and he placed them in the race not as a trap but as a question - in the specific places that only a person who had truly paid attention to Atalanta would know to put them.

Atalanta is told in two voices - hers and his - moving through the full arc of her life: the forest, the Argonauts, the race, and the lions. It is the story of a woman who outran everything the world threw at her and chose, finally, to stop - not because she was caught, not because she was tricked, but because someone had thought about her carefully enough to know where she would go.
