Brand Whitlock's account of his experiences living in Belgium provides insight into the country's unique culture and challenges. As the U.S. ambassador to Belgium from 1914 to 1921, Whitlock had a front-row seat to the country's political and social developments during one of its most tumultuous periods. His memoir is an engaging, indispensable read for anyone interested in European history.
