A classic work that vividly interprets the unique spiritual symbols of the Chinese nation.

生动诠释中华民族独特精神标识的经典之作;百年来中国图书出版重要的书史著作之一

"The rich variety and long-standing continuity of ancient Chinese books and written records embody the spiritual essence of the Chinese nation and represent a unique marvel in world civilization."

This book is a comprehensive and systematic study of ancient Chinese written records and their material carriers prior to the invention of printing. It begins with the earliest known Chinese writing from the Shang dynasty and extends to the early Tang dynasty (around 700 A.D.), when printing was in its nascent stage. It reveals that the richness, continuity, and ubiquity of Chinese written records constitute a distinctive feature unparalleled in world cultural history.

The first chapter discusses the distinctive features and significance of ancient Chinese written records, as well as the social background and scholarly factors underlying their evolution. Chapters Two through Seven respectively examine the major writing media of each period, including oracle bones, bronze, pottery, jade and stone, bamboo and wooden slips, silk, and paper scrolls, with detailed discussions on their contents, scripts, systems, and characteristics. Chapter Eight traces the forms and evolution of various writing implements. Chapter Nine summarizes the main points of the preceding chapters in an accessible and general interpretation.

The focus of this study is on the origins of inscriptions and books, as well as the transformation of their physical forms-including materials, shapes, techniques, and methods. Each type of writing medium is thoroughly investigated on the basis of both archaeological and documentary sources.
