Teljes leírás

The 1881 Russian edition is now an extremely rare antique. Read Bugaev's course in English.

Nikolai V. Bugaev (1837-1903) was a Moscow University professor and twice dean, one of the Moscow Mathematical Society's 14 original members, and its president from 1891 until his death. The St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member. His research in analysis and number theory placed him among the central figures in Moscow mathematics. This translation lets readers follow the course he developed for students.

Bugaev starts with symbols and operations, then leads readers through algebraic fractions, equations, powers and roots, inequalities, proportions, continued fractions, progressions, logarithms, and combinations. Definitions and proofs establish why the rules hold; worked computations show how to apply them; a substantial question set invites readers to work through the methods themselves. The book offers both a rigorous course in algebra and a primary source on how mathematics was taught in late nineteenth-century Russia.
