Fotografien und Filmaufnahmen von Abwrackwerften in Südasien zeugen von einem andauernden arbeits- und umweltpolitischen Skandal. 80 Prozent des Welthandels werden von Schiffen transportiert, vier von fünf dieser Schiffe werden am Ende ihres Lebens in Asien verschrottet. Chittagong Schiffbruch erläutert die Hintergründe des globalen Schiffsverkehrs, beleuchtet die Vorgänge in einer Werft am Strand nördlich der Metropole in Bangladesch und problematisiert deren Ästhetisierung durch internationale und lokale Fotograf·innen. Der Autor arbeitet mögliche Folgen einer Deglobalisierung heraus und diskutiert alternative Formen globalen Wirtschaftens entlang des Konzepts einer nachhaltigen "Blue Economy" in den Weltmeeren. Claus Leggewie ist Ludwig Börne-Professor an der Universität Gießen. Von 2007 bis 2015 war Leggewie Direktor des Kulturwissenschaftlichen Instituts Essen, wo er den Forschungsbereich Klima und Kulturen als ersten seiner Art in Deutschland aufbaute und zugleich das Centre for Global Coopera- tion Research (KHK/GCR21) in Duisburg gründete. Von 2008 bis 2016 war er Mitglied des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats der Bundesregierung Globale Umweltveränderungen (WBGU).--Photographs and film footage of shipbreaking yards in South Asia attest to an ongoing scandal surrounding labour and the environment. Eighty per cent of world trade involves goods transported by ship, and at the end of their lives four out of five of these ships are scrapped in Asia. Chittagong Shipwreck expounds the background of global shipping, shedding light on what happens in a shipyard on a beach north of the Bangladeshi metropolis and focusing on the issue of these processes being aestheticized by international and local photographers. The author elaborates some of the possible consequences of deglobalization and discusses alternative forms the global economy might take in line with the concept of a sustainable "Blue Economy" designed to steward the world's oceans. Claus Leggewie is Ludwig Börne Professor at the University of Giessen. From 2007 to 2015, Leggewie acted as the director of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Essen where he established the research area Climate and Cultures as a first of its kind in Germany, and founded the Center for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/ GCR21) in Duisburg. From 2008 to 2016, he was a member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU).
