Her mother left behind one final instruction: Go to the house before you decide what to do with my ashes.
Leena Patel has spent the last month doing what grief requires.

And the twenty-one-year-old voice of her mother singing in a Jackson park.
Suddenly Asha is no longer simply Mom. She was once a young woman with questions of her own-a woman who cried during kirtan, challenged spiritual explanations, received tulasi beads from a mysterious woman named Mira, and carried something from those summer gatherings with her for the rest of her life.
As Leena searches through old recordings, photographs, letters, and forgotten pieces of Jackson history, she begins discovering a mother she never knew.
She also begins discovering herself.
There is Aiden Shah, an EMT with tilak on his forehead, an inconvenient sense of humor, and his own complicated relationship with faith. There is prasadam downstairs after kirtan. Early-morning chanting she was never invited to attend but somehow attends anyway. Japa beads that once belonged to her mother. And a community that refuses to tell Leena what she is supposed to believe.
Most unsettling of all, Leena begins to like being there.
Because perhaps the question was never simply where Asha's ashes should go.
Perhaps the deeper question is what Leena is supposed to do with everything her mother left behind.
Her grief.
Her unfinished nursing career.
Her fear of loving people she cannot save.

And a holy name her mother once carried from Jackson to Grand Rapids without ever explaining where she found it.
