Cumbernauld boasts a rich history from Roman times, with the Antonine Wall nearby; through formation of the historic village and construction of Cumbernauld Castle; to the building of Cumbernauld House in the mid-eighteenth century. Existing for much of time as little more than a small village and a number of farms, Cumbernauld was changed forever with its designation as a New Town in December 1955. Cumbernauld was one of five Scottish New Towns created to alleviate overcrowding in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with families who arrived in Cumbernauld being greeted with good quality housing, new employment opportunities, and large open greenspaces. Cumbernauld was given welcome publicity when Bill Forsyth chose the town as the sole filming location for Gregory's Girl in the early 1980s, going on to become one of the British Film Institute's Top 100 British Films of all time. Cumbernauld has an incredibly active community, with numerous hard-working groups and dedicated individuals working to make the town a better place to live, work, and visit. This book will help tell the story of Cumbernauld, from before its inception as a New Town to the present day, where it continues to grow and develop as one of Scotland's largest towns.
