Germany during the Second World War. Gisela is young, and the world she knows is falling apart. In her diary, she writes to Max, her husband who is now a prisoner of war in Russia. And on its pages she keeps what the war is trying to take from her: love, hope and the small ordinary moments that make up a life, so that Max has something to catch up on if he ever returns home.
War itself never leaves her side. It reads over her shoulder, follows her through fear and loss, and tells her story as only it can: up close, unsparing, and at times surprisingly tender, taking the reader into the real-life consequences of what it's like to live in times of war, without being an active soldier fighting on the front of it.
Based on the real wartime diaries of the author's grandmother, Dear Max is a moving work of literary fiction about endurance, humanity and memory, narrated from the most unexpected point of view. It is a quiet, haunting portrait of one woman holding on to herself while history tears through everything around her. But furthermore, it is a stern warning to today's readership, about how there are no true victors in war and how easily it can still corrupt us all.
