A coming-of-age novel about the will to survive, the lingering cost of war, and the bittersweet beauty of redemption.
Eight years after fleeing Germany, Lukas Ley has found refuge in the United States. But eighteen-year-old Lukas is eager to leave his family and girlfriend behind if it means he can finally fight back against the Nazi regime that murdered his father. Unfortunately, a failed physical throws his dream of flight school off course. Unlike his war-hero older brother, Lukas's purpose is unclear. He can't fly, so he accepts the best alternative offered to him-the front lines.
From the foxholes of war-ravaged Luxembourg to the devastation of an enormous German offensive, Lukas's journey is fraught with peril. But when he's taken as a prisoner of war, he realizes life is about to get much worse. In the enemy camp, Lukas is viewed as a German fighting for the wrong side. Ripped from the support of his family, his sweetheart, and his home, he finds his courage and convictions tested at every turn. His only hope of survival is to hold tightly to his faith in God and the support of his fellow prisoners. But will doing what it takes to survive damage his soul behind repair?
