On Devil's Night in 1994, five boys locked eleven-year-old Ezra Hollis in his family's icehouse and walked away.
The boy was never found. His father was arrested instead, and the town of Harlow, Michigan closed the file with a single word: river.
Thirty-two years later, Detective Cass Meredith is back in the town that raised her-and someone is dressing Harlow's most respected men as Halloween decorations. A county judge posed as a scarecrow in a cornfield. The town doctor floating in a vat of pressing apples. Beside each body: a gold candy wrapper from a factory that closed in 1995, and a thirty-year-old question the county has refused to answer.
As Harlow's beloved Hallowfest counts down to the opening of a haunted attraction built on the old Hollis farm, Cass pulls a thread that unravels her own family: her dying father's secret notebooks, her brother's grave, and a trusted deputy who knows things about the farm that aren't in any file.
Some doors were locked for a reason. On Halloween night, the whole town is going to hear what's behind them.
