This book focuses on the process of economic change in South Nyanza between 1880 and 1945. The study commences from 1880 to analyze the changes during the pre-colonial period to provide a background to understand the changes that occurred in the area during the colonial period. The book demonstrates that economic change occurred in South Nyanza during the pre- and colonial period. The study shows that during the pre-colonial era, changes were necessitated by the outbreak of cattle epidemics. When South Nyanza was colonised in 1903, the pre-capitalist economy of the area was integrated into colonial economy. Colonial capitalism therefore transformed the economy of South Nyanza. The study illustrates that the households in the area responded creatively to the new demands brought about by colonialism.
