The true connection between mother and child surpasses the moment in which the newborn baby is cut loose from its mother; moreover, at that very moment a new tie arises, one that might not be acknowledged or seen by the naked eye, but is more real than anything you can imagine. You cannot compare the intensity of this love with one you feel for your partner or friend. You cannot 'get over' the love you feel for your child; you never forget. This does not mean that your child will never affect the feelings you have for him or her; because of this bond there will be no other person who can hurt you more than your own child. The hurt will burn deeper and longer after any other emotional blow by anyone else... Esperanza is a tale of a family torn apart by a child within it - or perhaps by the unfailing love of Esperanza's mother, Angela, who cannot turn away the one person who is determined to destroy any chance of happiness for Angela and her two younger children.
