A genome consists of chromosomes, each being built up of two complementary strands of nucleic acid known as DNA. Its chemical integrity, however, is under constant assault from metabolic mutagens, such as hydroxy-radicals, endonucleases, radiation, replication errors, and environmental mutagens.
