Good Grief! - Songs in the Sea of Hope began with a story Carrie Helliesen had already spent two years writing. Just as she was nearing completion of her memoir, a fire destroyed her home-and with it, every form in which the manuscript had been saved. The trauma that followed, along with the many losses and challenges she had already carried, made returning to the story feel impossible.
Yet she could not let it go.
Through her love of music, photography, and the ocean, its shores, skies, and living world, Carrie found a new language for the story: poetry, reflections, and photographs. What emerged is a deeply personal exploration of the many currents of the human experience-grief, loss, trauma, pain, disruption, healing, and transformation-where grief and gratitude can exist side by side.
The poems and photographs invite readers into a world where the sea holds both storms and calm, where beauty can appear unexpectedly, and where signs and blessings may be found even in difficult waters. Through reflection, there is space for hope; through hope, the possibility of love-including the journey back to loving oneself.
The journey begins in grief and moves toward gratitude.
For anyone grieving a person or beloved pet, moving through trauma or profound change, feeling lost, or longing to hope and love again, Good Grief! offers a reflective and thought-provoking journey through the human experience.
Because grief does not erase gratitude, and the rainbow does not erase the storm.
Something beautiful can emerge even from loss and pain.
