Most people enjoy a beautiful country walk, but how many people take a look down at the history beneath their feet?
Over 90% of the land in the UK is not built on, much of it in use for agriculture and accessible by public footpaths.
The area in which I live is a typical rural community, a patchwork of fields and hedges that form our traditional view of what the countryside looks like.
But look closer in those fields and hedgerows, thousands of years of human history are waiting to be discovered by those willing to make the effort.
The objects in this book were all found by me, mostly within a mile of my house and span 5000 years of human history. Fossil finds take us all the way back to around 200 million years ago in the Jurassic period when a shallow sea covered southern England.
These objects were all found with the human eye, not metal detectors, and similar finds can be found by anyone willing to spend time in the idyllic countryside.
Treasures are waiting to be found by the whole family.
