What I'm offering you in How To Sleep Better is not a new discovery. It's an ancient pattern that I've tested in my own life and in the lives of people I've pastored and mentored over the years. The Bible talks about rest from the very beginning, when God Himself rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired but because He wanted to establish a rhythm for His creation. It talks about rest in the Psalms, and in the Gospels, and in the letters to the early churches. The people of God have been learning to sleep in the middle of danger for thousands of years. I'm just translating that old wisdom into language and practices that make sense for a modern, anxious, overstimulated person like you. That's all. I'm a bridge, not a genius.
You should also know that I'm not going to be neutral about the spiritual dimension of this. I can't be, because I've seen too much to pretend otherwise. But I promise you I won't be preachy. I won't quote Scripture at you like a club. I'll share the verses and the truths that have carried me, and I'll trust you to receive them as you can. If you're not a person of faith, I hope you'll stay with me anyway, because the practices work on their own terms - breathing deeply, laying down worries, creating a calm space, these are good for every human body. And if you are a person of faith, I hope you'll find here a deeper integration of what you believe and how you actually live your nights. The two should not be separate. The peace you sing about on Sunday should be available to you at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday. That's the integration this book is after.
