Mental health pressures in the workplace have risen sharply in recent years, and an increasing number of people are suffering as a result. Mental health conditions are already among the four most common causes of sick leave. This places increasing pressure on companies to play their part in maintaining their employees' ability to work. But what measures can they take to counteract this trend? Could one-to-one coaching, as a well-established staff development measure, be a suitable method? This thesis examines this question from several angles: How do people react to stress, and what negative consequences does this have for businesses and the economy? What effects can be achieved through one-to-one coaching, and what limitations must be taken into account? How does the specific role of executives and managers fit into this analysis? What are the key components of a stress prevention programme? And what barriers arise from the perspective of both the organisation and its employees when implementing such a programme? Finally, the thesis provides an outlook on the necessary areas for action.
