INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SENSOR
AI, Digital Twins and the Instrumented District
What happens when infrastructure can do more than sense the world-when its data can help us understand, anticipate, and respond to what is happening?
A bridge generates measurements. A pipeline reveals changing conditions. An optical-fiber network captures physical disturbances. But the real opportunity emerges when these observations connect with artificial intelligence, computational models, and digital twins.
Infrastructure as a Sensor: AI, Digital Twins and the Instrumented District explores the engineering principles behind this convergence-and the challenges of turning raw measurements into reliable intelligence.
Discover how sensing architectures, AI-driven analytics, digital representations, and interconnected infrastructure can contribute to a deeper understanding of complex physical systems. Examine why data quality, model fidelity, uncertainty, validation, and human judgment remain essential when predictions inform real-world decisions.
This volume explores a fundamental question: how can we move beyond collecting data to building systems that help us interpret evidence and make better-informed decisions?
For engineers, researchers, postgraduate students, and technology professionals, this book offers a systems-oriented perspective on the future of intelligent infrastructure.
The future is not simply infrastructure that can sense more. It is infrastructure whose signals, models, and intelligence can work together to inform decisions that matter.
Volume III of The Instrumented World series - From physical signals to intelligent infrastructure.
