Tourism is a cross-cutting socioeconomic and cultural activity. Because of this cross-cutting nature, it encompasses several socioeconomic sectors-including construction, transportation, hospitality, and food service-and is therefore highly dependent on the prevailing sociopolitical climate and economic conditions. Thus, to formulate sustainable tourism development policies (economically profitable, socially viable, and environmentally friendly), it is essential to consider the process rather than isolated facts. This is why this book aims to explore factors that, if not taken into account during the design, development, and implementation of tourism policy, could undermine all well-intentioned efforts to promote tourism development. The history of tourism in Côte d'Ivoire, security constraints, environmental constraints, and transportation-related constraints-all of which are addressed in this Volume 1-feature prominently among the factors to be considered when formulating tourism development policy.
