Open Water begins at twilight, when the last of the daylight slips across the South African Convergence.
Far below the surface, a curious lanternfish named Lux leaves the darkness below while Jelly, a transparent comb jelly, drifts wherever the Current carries her. Around them, millions of ocean neighbors begin the same nightly journey. Lanternfish rise toward the surface. Squid gather beneath the glow of distant fishing boats. Whales arrive. Dolphins chatter. Sharks circle the edges. By morning, each will have returned to its own corner of the sea, ready to keep the same appointment again tomorrow night.
