This volume features the proceeding of the "Sustainable Energy in the Built Environment - Nearly Zero Energy Communities " conference held in Brasov, Romania, in 2017. It focuses on the challenges of implementing novel R&D results to develop solutions for the future sustainable communities. The "sustainable community" topic has recently emerged as a possible efficient and affordable answer to the major threats of global warming. The focus of the conveners and contributors of this volume is to lift the barriers that limit the implementation of solar energy conversion systems in buildings and in the built environment, to integrate these and foster acceptance by the markets and the society. The energy mixes involving other renewables represent an issue of interest and are also included in the volume. Beyond the research and technological aspects, the proceedings tackle also specific aspects related to education, policies, local and regional strategies. The intended audience for this volume includes academics and professionals active in implementing renewable energy systems in the built environment.
