Numeracy frameworks and syllabuses often begin with forward counting sequences, but what comes before? What skills do students need to make numbers meaningful. For those with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities, these can be as fundamental as recognising the difference between something and nothing, or more and less. How do we develop these skills?
This book breaks standard outcomes down into small steps. Each of these steps is supported by background information, activities and strategies. Suggestions include how to incorporate numeracy in a student's day or as part of a theme or specific activity. Assessment and task analysis suggestions are included. There is also a comprehensive guide to stocking a classroom with equipment to support learning including inexpensive alternatives to commercial educational resources.
The progression of numeracy skill described in this book will aid educators in special education settings working with students with mild to moderate, severe or profound intellectual disabilities. It is also relevant to educators of students with global delay or who are neuro-diverse with specific learning needs. The activities will also be of interest to parents whether they wish to support their child's numeracy skills or are homeschooling.
