Fifty years ago nursing was a very different affair to what it is today: a nurse was responsible for everything associated with a patient's care, from medical treatment to laundering and cleaning to emotional support, and in the immediate post-war period nurses had to overcome the restraints of continued rationing, archaic equipment and the dreaded London smog in one of the most challenging but valuable professions there are.
