This book presents a timely study of the use of social media in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It uses social exchange theory, and the sociology of emotions, to study selected sites in the QQ online forum to explain the strategies pursued by men in Hong Kong to establish short-term sexual relations with women in Mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen. It focuses on the distinction between negotiated and reciprocal social exchange from a social exchange theory perspective, and, to a lesser extent, combines these concepts with insights from the sociology of emotions, to better explain the data. The book provides original insights into the thoughts, motivations, gratifications, and risks of Hong Kong men who chase women on the Mainland online. The topic is highly relevant to understanding the evolving use of social media, which is of worldwide importance.
