Portishead, in North Somerset, is a popular seaside town. Situated in the Severn estuary, Portishead has a long and vibrant history predominantly as a fishing port. Expansion in this area took place around the beginning of the nineteenth century, and occurred in line with the building of the dock. By the mid-nineteenth century, a pier was also built to cater for larger ships that found it easier to moor at Portishead than its neighbouring Bristol dock. Despite its once thriving usage, the dock finally closed in 1992. Today, the town's population continues to grow, and Portishead is known as a dormitory town for Bristol and its environs. A bustling area, with a keen sense of community, in recent years the area has been recognised as the home town to the aptly named band Portishead. Bristol based historian, archeologist and researcher Will Musgrave charts North Somerset's history in this wonderful location through a selection of remarkable old and modern photographs and postcards.
