This book provides a comprehensive review of protein-based materials systems from a materials science perspective. The contributions are written by the leading scientists currently working in the field. The book is divided into three sections:§In the first section, the chemical and biological approaches to this unique class of materials are presented.§The second section includes detailed introductions to the key classes of protein materials - silks, protein composites and elastomeric and adhesive proteins.§The final section covers processing issues including liquid crystal phase formation, the spinning of protein fibers, formation of protein-based films and coatings, and self-organized protein systems.§The book can serve as a valuable teaching tool for students and scientists. In addition, it can be used as a reference guide for information on all aspects of protein-based materials, including chemistry, genetic engineering, modelling and processing.
