Down-on-his-luck thirty-something journalist Ryan Rothstein is determined to restore his reputation after an unavoidable story scandal resulted in a career-killing retraction. Stalking LAX's viewing decks for an ambush interview, he spots Lola, a free-spirited, gritty rockstar princess who may be part of the androgynously costumed marquee rock band, Barbie Mothra, disembarking from their private jet.
Ostensibly invincible, the superstar rock band's activism with Justice for Fallen Women, subsidizing rewards and hosting tiplines, guided their private security forces in the apprehension of two recent serial killers on the FBI's Top Ten list. Ryan knows this and is determined to seize a scoop on the media-elusive rockstars who could resurrect his career. He orchestrates a rendezvous shortly after Lola struts off the taxiway.
When a good-natured rapport is established, unbothered and unkempt Lola reveals her plan to stage the rescue of a prolific killer's daughter. Dubbed "The Mortician," he's believed by the feds to be multiple serials with eighty-seven missing and/or murdered female bodies on his jacket since the 1980s, including the rockstar, Izzy Brown, in the summer of '94.
A botched abduction in Phoenix sends the pair on a series of explosive skirmishes while fleeing the brutal killer. Ryan and the sarcastic badass Lola hastily evade The Mortician across the States, from Venice Beach and San Jose to Salt Lake City, The Marsh Island Bayou, Stone Mountain, Atlanta, Quantico and finally, The Mainstage in Knots County, Iowa.
As the countdown to MothraCong '26, the band's pinnacle Halloween event, draws near, they must use all their wit, tech, an unexpected FBI assist and powerful Wiccan Knights to stop The Mortician before he makes the festival his next crime scene.
