Most companies do not lack data. They lack agreement. Sales forecasts optimistically because targets drive behavior. Supply chain plans conservatively because stockouts are visible and excess inventory is not, until it is. Finance builds a budget in isolation months before the year starts and then spends the rest of the year reconciling reality against a number nobody currently believes. Each function is behaving rationally within its own silo. The organization as a whole is not behaving rationally at all.
S&OP exists to fix this. It creates one forum, on a fixed rhythm, where the assumptions behind the numbers are surfaced, tested, and either accepted or changed - deliberately, by the people accountable for the outcome, rather than by default because nobody had the conversation.
This is a practical book, not a philosophical one. Each chapter gives you the mechanics - the inputs, the outputs, the meeting agendas, the KPIs, the pitfalls - that a real S&OP process needs to run. But throughout, I have kept the Fusion Leadership lens visible, because I have never seen a company install the mechanics successfully without also building the trust and cadence that make people show up, tell the truth, and commit to the plan.
