Despite trust being the first thing to build when dealing with dragons and magic, Elarie Crosha is feared to be a monster sent to burn the pirate crew of the Greyscale alive, and not even the prince may be able to keep her from becoming just another horrible beast from the depths of the terrifying sea. If it weren't for her frightening ability to return from the dead, Elarie would be an asset to not only the Dragon Prince, but the captain with a dangerous magic brewing within him.
Still, the prince is desperate for knowledge, and if he has to use a dragon to learn her secrets he'll say and do anything to gain her trust. Elarie's connection to the great beasts is his key to understanding his own, making her his only hope for learning to ride and trust a frayed connection. As he finds that she isn't what he assumed Calix begins to lose his way, and a new friendship may lead to a split between himself, the crew, and his best friend.
Even with god-like magic causing pain to run through his body, Kaelum finds it difficult to trust anything Elarie tells him about what he inherited. The captain doesn't trust her any more than he trusts the open mouth of the dragon sleeping on his deck, but he needs her. If he doesn't learn control quickly it could mean the death of his crew and the love of his life.
Trust only proves harder to build as monsters of many creations battle the ship, and Elarie's past comes back to haunt her. No connection she makes may be enough to stop creation from being her undoing. Time runs out, even for immortals.
