When the world order crumbled in 1989, two squares emerged as focal points for global change. People gathering on Nikolaikirchhof in Leipzig and on Tiananmen Square in Beijing questioned institutionalized rule and reached out to an audience far beyond their national setting. This book discusses the dynamics behind the synchronous outburst of protests in China and Germany in 1989 and the local acts of dissent on the squares comparatively. In doing so, it breaks with the national timelines protests 1989 have so far been discussed in and offers insights into the spatial manifestation of the global moment 1989. The book will be of interest to a broad audience, as it works interdisciplinary and comparatively across two world regions. Thus the book appeals to several academic disciplines at once, especially history, sociology, social movement studies, and political science in general. Offering a global perspective on a phenomenon that itself became global in the last decades, the book provides a new view on globalization processes operating from below.
