Teljes leírás

You have ideas. This book helps you turn one into open source that people can use, join, and keep alive.

Most side projects stall after the first commit. Others ship once, then drown in issues, unclear scope, or a maintainer who never asked for a community. Spark is a practical guide from first itch to lasting project: how to find and validate ideas, design for strangers, license and secure the work, launch without hype, grow contributors, govern decisions, fund sustainably, and hand off when you need to.

What you will learn

  • Capture and score ideas with worksheets you can reuse
  • Scope an MVP, choose a stack, and shape a repository people trust
  • Pick a license path with a clear decision flow (not legal advice)
  • Ship with tests, CI, docs, and basic supply-chain hygiene
  • Launch on major channels with channel-specific dos and don'ts
  • Onboard first contributors and document how decisions get made
  • Handle conflict, measure health, avoid burnout, and plan funding or succession

Who it is for

Students and junior to mid-level developers starting a first serious open source project. Also for experienced developers who can build software but struggle to choose, finish, launch, or grow an idea. Assumes basic programming and Git; every other term is defined in plain language.

Why this book

One volume, one running fictional project carried from idea through succession, with working code, templates, checklists, exercises, and seventy-five starter project ideas in tables. Written for builders who want clarity over noise-and a project that can outlast a weekend.
