The bells of Blythburgh no longer call people to worship.
They warn them to run.
Something is hunting the farms and lonely roads surrounding the Suffolk village. Livestock has been torn apart. People have vanished from the tracks. Doors are barred before sunset, children are kept inside, and the villagers have learned to listen for the first warning strike from the tower of Holy Trinity Church.
Thomas Sheppard is a Licensed Monster Investigator from London's Green Zone. Known to most as the Old Dog, he takes contracts wherever fear has become flesh and ordinary defences are no longer enough.
Thirty years after the Fall, Britain's surviving cities stand behind walls. Beyond them, isolated communities endure alone, and the creatures once confined to folklore no longer remain safely inside stories.
When Blythburgh's council hires Sheppard to investigate the attacks, he expects a hunt. Instead, he finds a village closing in on itself, signs leading steadily beyond its borders, and something in the darkness that has already learned where its prey will run.
To stop it, Sheppard must follow the killings beyond the village lights and into the fields before the bells ring again.
