Fionn Gallagher does not read books. Books are a trap. The letters swim, the words swap places, and everybody else in class is on page forty while he is still stuck on the first line. So he fakes it. He fakes book reports, he fakes reading logs, he fakes his way through every single Monday. And he is really, really good at it.
Then one bad book report lands him three afternoons of library service at the Ravensford Public Library, standing in front of the old brass returns chute. The chute nobody uses. The chute that drops way farther down than the building actually goes.
Something down there sends a book back up.
