Denny cut the engine in his mother's driveway at forty-five, four months shy of forty-six, with everything that mattered folded down into a Civic - three boxes of books, a footlocker of manuscripts nobody bought, and a guitar he could no longer make himself play.
Twenty-four years of marriage, gone. Fourteen years watching other men's worst days across eleven monitors, resigned. He'd come home to the twin bed of his childhood the way a person comes home when he isn't moving toward anything, only away.
Then, standing barefoot on the cold patio at midnight, he felt it for the first time - a pull. East. Specific and immediate and impossible, a compass needle snapping toward something out past the dark hump of the hills. There was nothing there. He believed maybe sixty percent of that.
What waits at the end of the Pull is older than Denny, and more patient, and it knows him better than anyone living. It has been singing the same low note since he was fourteen years old - since an unfinished story, a closed notebook, a boy who walked away from the one thing he'd made with everything he had.
Now it wants him to come back and finish the harmony.
To stand against it, Denny has almost nothing: a fierce, guarded photographer who refuses to be a stranger, a quiet studio owner steadier than she lets on, and the slow, terrifying work of learning the difference between surviving a life and actually living one.
The house isn't quite empty. The town isn't quite safe. And the ordinary man at the center of it is being asked to be braver than he ever planned on being - before whatever has waited thirty-one years decides it has waited long enough.
