Excerpt from The Decennial Census 1955: Population and Legal Voters of Massachusetts In accordance with the provisions of General Laws, Tercentenary Edition, Chapter 9, section 6, as amended, the special enumeration of legal voters required by Articles XXI and XXII of the Amendments to the Constitution as appearing in Article LXXI thereof, was determined by obtaining a sworn statement from the election commissioners or registrars of voters in each city and town of the Commonwealth, of the number of registered voters in their respective cities or towns on January 1, 1955, specifying in the case of cities the number of registered voters in each ward, and in towns of twelve thousand inhabitants or over which vote in precincts, the number of registered voters in each precinct.
