Michael Denny has built a career on being trusted with things that can't be replaced.
So when a three-line email offers a fee that makes him read it twice - no photographs, no provenance, only a question about whether he can guarantee discretion absolutely, or merely mostly - he drives out to the estate against his own better judgment. Somebody wants this badly enough not to need to convince him.
The painting is a single dark rose. Unremarkable, on its face. Restrained in a way that feels less like a stylistic choice than a decision - as if the artist knew exactly how much to show, and stopped there on purpose. Michael can't say why he doesn't want to look away from it.
The two women who own it don't do anything by half. Serenity Lee is exact, deliberate, the kind of person who looked into him before she ever called. Her sister Sashara is theater and appetite and a warmth that reaches all the way up when she lets it. Whatever they do, they do completely, or they don't bother - and they've decided, without quite saying so, that Michael is something they intend to do completely.
But the longer he works, the clearer his own careful measurements become. The rose is not aging. It is not simply coming clean under his hands. It is changing, steadily, in a direction he has no professional vocabulary for at all.
And on the night the color deepens most, someone in the house is certain the painting looked back.
