Winter Harbor, a coastal town that has not seen snow in twenty years despite still bearing its winter-themed name, begins to experience a series of unnatural weather events when a massive, unexplained storm suddenly engulfs the harbor, bringing violent winds, strange blue lightning, and an eerie figure glimpsed at sea; afterward, the town is left colder than it has been in decades, and sixteen-year-old Mara Dawson discovers an ancient silver compass buried in a newly exposed section of shoreline that reacts to the old lighthouse and hints at a hidden connection to the storm. As the town wakes the next morning to find the harbor partially frozen for the first time in generations, Mara notices a glowing trail of icy footprints crossing the ice-visible only to her-suggesting that something or someone impossible has emerged with the return of winter, drawing her deeper into a mystery that the rest of the town cannot yet see or understand.
