Young's Literal Translation - finally readable.

In 1862, Robert Young produced the most word-for-word faithful English translation of Scripture ever made - preserving every tense, every article, and every word order exactly as the biblical authors wrote them. No paraphrasing. No smoothing. No interpreter standing between the reader and the text.

There was one problem. Young wrote in the English of Victorian Scotland. Thee, thou, doth, hath, behoveth, sheweth. Language that was already formal in his own day has become a wall between modern readers and the most literal Bible translation in existence.

The New Literal Translation removes that wall - and nothing else.

Every archaic word has been carefully replaced with its modern equivalent. The literal structure Young labored to preserve - the word order reflecting the original languages, the verb tenses mirroring the Greek and Hebrew, the implied-word brackets, the parenthetical clauses, the consistent term choices - all of it remains exactly as Young rendered it. What has changed is only the English clothing. What has not changed is the word-for-word faithfulness that makes Young's work unlike any other translation.

Then this edition goes further. Four transparent marking systems give readers access to layers of meaning no standard translation provides:

  • [ ] - Implied words not present in the original language
  • ( ) - Young's parenthetical clauses from the original text
  • Name tags - Every biblical name shown with its original meaning
  • † italics - The original word behind any modernized replacement

The result is a New Testament that reads clearly in modern English while showing you, at every step, exactly what the original text actually says - something no other edition in print currently offers.

Who this edition is for:

  • Bible students who want word-for-word accuracy without archaic language
  • Readers who have tried Young's original and found the Victorian English a barrier
  • Teachers and preachers who want to see the text as the authors wrote it
  • Anyone who has wondered what the Bible actually says beneath the layers of traditional translation

Based on Young's Literal Translation, Third Edition (1898). Public domain source text. All modernization, name meanings, expanded word markings, and editorial content are original to this edition.
