A man is dead. The wolf was standing over him. Everyone knows what happened. Everyone is wrong.
Eight months after the Blackbridge derailment, Tom Briggs has kept his promise. The impossible litter, the dogs born in a ditch full of an experimental chemical, live behind a court-protected fence. They're cared for, watched, and still not fully understood.
Then a contractor is found drowned below the old quarry, and the animal the papers call the Blackbridge Wolf is standing over the body. Within hours, a government fixer has signed an order to destroy it, and any dog found near it.
Kane, the black pup who never stopped watching the ridge, is already gone.
As the litter break out to bring their brother home, and an old railwayman on a ruined knee follows them into the hills, Tom begins to understand that the wolf was never the threat. Something else came out of that crash. Something smaller. Something that breeds, and learns, and waits, and that powerful people want to keep exactly where it is.
The only man who can map it is the train driver who lay in the poison longest. His mind is sharpening by the day, and he is running out of time to use it.
The Pack is the second book in The Litter series: a thriller about loyalty, cost, and what we owe the creatures we change.
