But inside the surviving PROVENANCE monitor, Daniel Reyes sees the real consequence of that partial victory. The unpublished GH-offset compartment has queried the keystone and is not trying to erase evidence. It is trying to find the machine that can identify it.
Tully, still injured and still unwilling to forgive Hale, becomes the living hinge between lawful power and outlaw survival. She knows the evidence cannot simply be dumped into the press without endangering live operations, but she also knows official custody can become disappearance by another name. Daniel wants to use every hidden capability Audrey built, even if doing so risks admissibility, exposes witnesses, or turns his grief into the weapon their enemies expect. Inside the White House, Hale and Beth Warren try to build a lawful container strong enough to protect evidence that no normal preservation order can safely hold. Miriam Sloane remains missing, Gordon Pike and Peter Lang know more than they have admitted, Roland Castellan's public cooperation may be a containment strategy, and the Steward's network still has reach. As Audrey's deeper monitor routines begin firing, Daniel realizes PROVENANCE was built not only to prove where public money vanished, but to mark the hand that came looking after the blank field was exposed.
Book 2 drives toward a single choice: whether Tully and Daniel can keep PROVENANCE alive long enough to name the internal hunter, while Hale risks the office he is trying to save to keep the law from becoming the evidence's grave.
