Some houses hold secrets. This one holds a grudge. When Elena Vale returns to the isolated New Zealand town of Blackfern to sell her grandmother's house, she expects a quick escape, not a twenty-one-night sentence. She wants no part of the town her mother fled, and even less to do with Finn Mercer, the man who broke her heart and embodies everything she distrusts about Blackfern.
But her grandmother's will is strangely specific: an eastern room locked, foundation stones undisturbed, and the house never empty after sunset. Elena dismisses them as a controlling old woman's final ploy, until the house itself begins to stir. Doors lock on their own, flowers bloom at the scent of tears, and the floorboards warm beneath her feet when Finn is near.
Then, a bell rings with no clapper, and her dead mother's voice calls from the forest. As heavy rains cut off Blackfern, a child vanishes, lured by a phantom whisper. The ancient boundary protecting the town begins to crumble, Finn's connection to the deepening woods becomes undeniable, and Elena realizes the house has been sheltering something far older and more dangerous than she could ever imagine.
To save the missing child and prevent a creeping grief from consuming Blackfern, Elena must confront her past with Finn, unravel the house's impossible truth, and decide if Blackfern is a prison she escaped, or a place she can finally choose to call home.
