Timmy Dolan's life is a grab bag of crisis: His work at a major New York City PR agency is being questioned; he's suffering the trauma of divorce, his battle against alcoholism is going badly. His depression is deepening. In the mid-90s go-go setting, his firm, like most others in the field, are facing a spectrum of interlinking issues -- the rising expectations of women, changing sexual mores, rapidly advancing communications technology, shifts in the nature and impact of media, social health concerns. Timmy's struggle plays out in a cutthroat work environment where he suddenly faces suspicion of scheming to cheat the company out of client billings. His best friend, a company higher-up, mounts an all-out defense until Timmy can't explain his signature on a damning document. Timmy then appears to have gotten entangled in a sexual scandal roiling the firm, a development giving pause to his protector. As Timmy sinks furtherer into his personal darkness, life at the agency goes on, spiced by client problems such as a consumer product contamination and insider trading, by the antics of the office gossip and office bookie, and by multiple sexual liaisons in various combinations. Then Timmy disappears and his often wise-ass friend (narrator of the tale) goes in search, accompanied by his talented and attractive live-in, who doesn't shrink from setting him straight as needed.
