The old lady on this train is looking at me, staring at me, she's been doing it since New Eltham, I can feel her eyes on the sweat of my neck. I turn to catch her out, and she flicks her head back to her book, like she's subtle, but she ain't. I'd rather she just punch me, y'know? The punch I can take, but the look ...all these frightened half-glances they ...they just ...I feel so alone. True Brits is a one-man play that tracks the life of Rahul, a young Londoner, as he tries to stake a claim for himself as British and understand what that entails. The 7/7 bombings occur just as he is on the verge of becoming a man, and his attempts to prove himself to be a tolerant, rational member of a society that now automatically distrusts him because of his skin colour draws him into ever-darker places. Developed as part of the HighTide Escalator programme and shortlisted for the Ideastap Underbelly Award 2014, True Brits will run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 31 July - 25 August 2014 in association with HighTide.
