What are genes? How do they work?
Genes are an essential part of all living things. They are segments of DNA molecules that are found in cells. Genes determine the traits of an organism, such as its shape, color, and response to stress.

Genes are made up of DNA molecules. DNA is a nucleic acid that contains a code. This code tells the cells what to do.
How genes work
Genes work by providing instructions for the production of proteins. Proteins are the building blocks of life. They are responsible for everything from the structure of our bodies to the functioning of our organs.
How genes are passed on
Genes are passed on from parents to offspring. When a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell, the two sets of DNA combine to form the DNA of the new offspring. This is how inherited traits are passed on from generation to generation.
